AN OPPORTUNITY IN DISGUISE

James Blakemore

As an entrepreneur, I have a lot of experience. I ran a mining company for 20 years, taking it from worthless to a multi-million- dollar sale. I started an environmental remediation company, which was doing well until our supplier folded, dictating the need to shut our business down. For many years, I was in the real estate rental property business and owned single and multi-family real estate. Every investment we made brought us a profit.

I was also part of a 100-year-old family business, a sawmill which was owned by my great grandfather, who turned it into the largest lumber concern in the state of Texas. Along the way, he bought land, harvested the timber, and sold the surface and kept the minerals. From there, he got in the oil and gas business, which made him quite wealthy.

From that, I learned there is always an opportunity built into another opportunity. So no matter what business I was in, I was always looking to be an ethical opportunist. I guess I got that from my great granddad.

My great grandfather left his entire empire to his two children, who were very successful in the ranching and oil business, but not necessarily in the other businesses. My grandfather passed his part of the businesses on to his two daughters when he died, one of which was my mom.

We took our inheritance from his estate, and we also enjoyed success. At one point, we were one of the top five largest landowners in the state of Texas.

When my father passed, he left the family business to his five children.

I’ve always had the opportunity to have the revenue to have the life and lifestyle I’ve enjoyed for some time. Mostly, I enjoyed being an entrepreneur and have been quite successful in my ventures.

Then something happened to change all that. The family-owned business that I only owned a minority portion of was being operated in a way that was not to my advantage. It significantly impacted the cash flow coming in to support my life and lifestyle, which was coming to a screeching halt, almost to the point that I could see the tread marks on the asphalt.

WTF? I was blindsided, wondering how a family member could cause such irreparable damage to the family’s legacy. I thought, what the fudge is going on here? Then when I figured out what had happened, I was left in shock, asking myself over and over, “What am I going to do?”

I could have rented the decorations and party supplies, because I admit I had a pity party, albeit a very short one, while I pondered how this could have happened—how does a family member do this to another family member? The emotions were deep, and they burned.

But I didn’t let that go on too long, because in my life, I’ve always known there is a balancing and sometimes even greater lesson or a gift within every challenge. This was no exception, and I knew I had could overcome it—I just had to find the gift.
